The NYC Dot Cake Trend Is Officially Going Viral

If your Instagram and TikTok feed has looked like a rainbow exploded lately, you’ve probably already stumbled across the dot cake. These colorful, sprinkle-coated little treats have taken over social media in a big way this May, and the obsession shows no signs of slowing down.

A Long Island mom-and-daughter bakery called The Dot Cakes started selling their signature Dotcups at a boutique Manhattan grocery store and almost overnight, the lines started wrapping around the block. Videos of customers scraping their spoons through that satisfying crust of rainbow nonpareils have racked up tens of millions of views. A humble Long Island bakery breaking the internet. We love to see it.

So what exactly is a dot cake?

The concept is beautifully simple: a single-serving cake baked in a sheet pan, cut into rounds, layered into a small cup with frosting, and finished with a thick, even coat of tiny nonpareil sprinkles on top. That dense crown of colorful dots is what gives the cake its name and its instantly recognizable, endlessly photogenic look.

Part of the appeal is pure nostalgia. The combination of fluffy vanilla cake, buttercream, and crunchy rainbow sprinkles tastes like a childhood birthday party in the best possible way. The other part is the ASMR factor, that satisfying crunch when a spoon breaks through the sprinkle layer is practically made for short-form video.

Want to make them at home?

The great news is you don’t need much. A sheet pan, small jars or cups, a pastry bag for piping, and a deep bowl of nonpareils are really all it takes. The technique is straightforward: bake, cut, layer, frost, and dip. The secret to a clean, professional dot finish is getting your frosting surface as flat and smooth as possible before you press it into the sprinkles.

At Bakedeco, we carry everything you need: sheet pans, round cutters, piping bags and tips, and nonpareils and sprinkles in every color imaginable. And that last part matters,  because while the rainbow version is what went viral, the real fun is making the format your own. Pastels for baby showers. Black and gold for a glamorous twist. School colors for graduation. Team colors for a watch party. The dot cake is one of those rare trends that’s simple enough for anyone to pull off and versatile enough to never get old.
